Every country has its own charms, traditions, and history. I was born in the US, but my parents are Mexicans, so I've grown into celebrating Mexican traditions more than American traditions; nonetheless, I appreciate both. However, these are a few things that I personally enjoy the most of my culture, as it makes me extremely proud to have Mexican roots.

Posadas

Mexicans wait anxiously for December as Posadas bring joy to many because it's a Christmas celebration. This celebration reenacts the journey that Mary and Joseph took to have baby Jesus safely. People gather up to celebrate this reenactment with Christmas music (mostly religious), pinatas, food, candy, etc... This celebration has expanded to many countries, such as the US and Latin America. Posadas unite people from all races and in Mexico this a huge deal as we value religion a lot.

Dia De Los Muertos

Dia De Los Muertos or "Day of the Dead" has become a worldwide tradition. Mexicans celebrate this tradition starting from October 31st to November 2nd to remember and celebrate the lives of their loved ones. Many like to dress up as skeletons, make sugar skulls, set an altar and go to the place where their loved ones rest to bring them food and artifacts.

Mexican Independence Day

Mexican Independence Day starts September 15 before midnight to the early hours of September 16, the official day that Father Miguel Hidalgo made the first cry for independence. On this day, the Mexican President reenacts this by ringing a bell and repeating the famous cry "Viva Mexico." This celebration continues with the Mexican anthem, fireworks, music, dance, etc...

Finally, if you have never tried any of the following, I highly recommend you give it a try, you won't regret it!

  • Food: Pozole, Chilaquiles, Mole Sauce

  • Drinks: Horchata, Agua de Jamaica, Mexican Ponche

  • Candy: Palanqueta, Pelon Pelo Rico, Duvalin, Mazapanes

These are only a few of the things that make me proud to be Mexican. My culture emerges all these beautiful things into one. Walking the LA streets and seeing my culture reflected on restaurants, stores, food, and people brings me huge joy and pride. However, it is with great sadness that these things are slowly fading away, and therefore we should not forget our roots and keep these traditions going for future generations.

P.S. majority of Mexicans go full on when our soccer team plays :,)
